Halle Berry Covers Vogue September 2010

Halle Berry Covers Vogue September 2010 photographed by Mario Testino.

Where have you been, Halle Berry?

If one hadn't read the tabloids lately, one might be forgiven for thinking that the Oscar-winning actress had thrown in the towel. After all, she has not given a proper interview in three years, nor has she made a big commercial film since X-Men: The Last Stand, four years ago. Aside from her Revlon ads and a perfume launch for Coty, Berry has lain low by the 2010 standards of never-let-'em-see-you-rest celebrity. Except, of course, most of us do see the tabloids, where Berry appears nearly every single day. Which means you already know two things: that Berry gave birth to perhaps the cutest baby girl ever, Nahla, with her very good-looking boyfriend, Gabriel Aubry, in March 2008; and that Berry and Aubry split earlier this year, an event that was covered as if Michelle Obama had decided to take the kids and move back to Chicago.

"With legendary surf gurus to guide them, Blake Lively and Hamish Bowles learn how to catch a wave."

I can't quite recall the disquieting moment when I realized that they were, in fact, all around me. I knew that Cameron Diaz broke her nose doing it and was unsurprised to discover that Stefano Pilati is very, very good at it. I was amazed to hear that my friend Holly Peterson travels to the ends of the Earth in pursuit of it and that Cynthia Rowley fashions clothing expressly for it. I knew that Damien Hirst's partner, Maia, is gaga for it but that he'd rather just watch, and I was frankly dumbfounded that both Barneys' gnomish Simon Doonan and Vanity Fair's Falstaffian Graydon Carter each had a go—and with the same happy band of practitioners, no less. Parker Power |Sarah Jessica Parker Vogue USA May 2010

Sarah Jessica Parker covers Vogue USA May 2010 photographed by Mario Testino

This woman here, poised, polished, and utterly composed in her Dior Haute Couture, is a phenomenally influential force (and driver of merchandise) in terms of culture, fashion, style, and beauty for vast numbers of women in their 20s and up. In terms of her own trade, she changed everything: She turned the twentieth-century American screen heroine on her head. In a black-and-white world with no ambiguity, nice girls were not style icons or sex goddesses. Carrie Bradshaw—as played by Sarah Jessica Parker ("the star next door," in the words of director Michael Patrick King)—is a triumph of the nice girl who, along with her gal pals, has an interesting and occasionally eyebrow-raising sex life as well.
